Esta ciudad cuyo nombre significa "En la boca del pozo de los itzáes", fue entre el 600 y 1250 N.E. el centro de poder político, económico, religioso y militar no sólo de Yucatán, sino de todo el sureste de Mesoamérica. El dominio Itzá incluyó parte de Tabasco y Campeche. parte de la costa del golfo y una gran parte de las tierras bajas de sur.
